If you let yourself get a little distracted
with life
and friends
and work
and Smash episodes
and State Fairs
and difficult conversations
and yoga
and your heart’s longings
and life’s unknowns
and dirty dishes
and such
you might not notice that
things around here can sure start
dying
pretty darn fast
especially things that have been
waiting
and waiting
and waiting
for any sign of
rain
for weeks
and when you finally
lift your head
and look around
you discover that
the brownness
is over-taking
the green
and the wilting
is undoing
the bloom
and you had better hurry up
and offer
these root-bound lives
a sprinkling
a dousing
no, a soaking
with water
and you hope it will be enough
and you wonder if there are any other
parts of you
that are needing the same
and you pray that
we all have the roots
to endure
these long, dry, barren seasons
when they come
because they do
